Duncan Charles Home was born on 23 October 1881. He was first commissioned, from Sandhurst, on 8 January 1901, into the Royal Scots. He transferred to the Indian Army in April 1903, and was appointed to the 32nd Sikh Pioneers with whom he served as a Double Company Officer in the Tibet campaign 1903-04. He transferred to the Military Farms Department in July 1907, being permanently unfit for active service due to deafness, as an Assistant Director, Grass Farms. Promoted to Captain in January 1910, Major in January 1916, he was a temporary Lieutenant-Colonel during the Great War and appointed Assistant Controller of Grass Farms from 25 February 1918. He became Lieutenant-Colonel in January 1927 and retired in April 1933.
