Robert William Clairmonte Keays was born on 8 June 1868. He was first commissioned, from Sandhurst, on 14 September 1887, into the Somerset Light Infantry. He transferred to the Indian Army in August 1888, and was appointed to the 28th Madras Light Infantry (later 88th Carnatic Infantry); Wing Officer, February 1892; Assistant Military Accountant, Military Accounts Department, Madras, 20 June 1895; Captain, September 1898; Double Company Commander 28th Madras L.I., April 1902, posted temporarily to Supply & Transport Corps; Double Company Commander 88th Carnatic Infantry (formerly 28th Madras L.I.) September 1905; Major, September 1905; Double Company Commander 86th Carnatic Infantry, November 1910; Lieutenant-Colonel, September 1913; Commandant 83rd Light Infantry, December 1914; retired 1 February 1921. For service in India during the Great War Keays received the British War Medal only.
