A John Byron Gurnhill is listed in the Army List. He was born on 4 March 1890. He was in the ranks for over two years and was a Temporary 2nd Lieutenant, February 1917-August 1918 and Temporary Lieutenant, August 1918-February 1920. He was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers on 24 July 1919. Gurnhill served in France/Flanders, August 1915-November 1916; April-June 1917, and April-November 1918. Was twice wounded and mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 7 September 1919). Was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals and G.S.M. with clasp Iraq.
