Augustus Wathen John Frederick Abbott was born on 16 November 1873. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion Munster Fusiliers in November 1897 and promoted to Lieutenant in August 1898. He was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Irish Regiment in April 1900 and in the following month was transferred to the A.S.C. He was promoted to Lieutenant in May 1901.
