Hammer Price:
£16,000

South Africa, Paul Kruger, Pond, 1898, with ‘99’ overstamp (Hern Z52; KM. 10.2; F 2). Lightly cleaned at some time, otherwise very fine or better, very rare (£12,000-15,000)

Provenance:
Mrs J. McDonald [from Spink October 1970]
with Bickels June/July 1971
bt Bickels September 1975.

Slabbed in NCS holder, graded AU but cleaned. The 1899 dies never arrived in Pretoria, so it was decided to overstamp 1898-dated Ponds. The first coin received a single ‘9’ overstamp; mint officials thought subsequent coins would be better overstamped with ‘99’ and 130 coins were thus produced.

Sold with an enlarged black and white photograph, written in ink on the back “We herewith certify that we have sold the coin depicted on the other side of this photograph to Mrs J. McDonald. We consider the coin to be genuine and in VF condition. If the coin were shown to be false, we would refund the total purchase price to the owner immediately”, signed by D.G. Liddell on behalf of Spink and dated 31 October 1970
