An American sidearm or machete, the 69cm flat solid blade by Collins & Co, Collinsville, Connecticut, stamped ‘Collins, Hartford’, the silver-plated brass hilt with chequered wood grip and wolf’s head pommel set with red glass eyes, downturned roped quillions, contained in its brown leather tooled scabbard, stamped ‘16’ and ‘Collins & Co Legitimus’, plated locket and replacement chape, blade discoloured, scabbard repaired £150-200

Established in 1826, Collins mainly made plows, axes and machetes, but during the Civil War produced sword blades.
