William Quelch enlisted in London on 22 April 1839 and joined the 16th Foot at Chatham on 26 April 1839. On 19 August he embarked on H.M.S. Windsor for India. Landing at Fort William in early 1840, he joined his regiment at Dinapore on 19 March 1840. With the 16th Foot being posted back to Ireland, Quelch transferred to the 31st Foot in October 1840. Promoted to Corporal in January 1845, he served with his regiment in the opening battle of the Sikh War. Corporal Quelch was killed in action at the battle of Moodkee, 18 December 1845.
