Alexander John Ogilvie was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Madras Artillery in June 1849. Promoted to Lieutenant in February 1855, Captain in February 1860 and Major in July 1872; he retired with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in August 1872.
