William George Milne was born in Bristol in 1885 and attested there for the Highland Light Infantry on 11 August 1903. He served during the Great War with the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front from 26 August 1914 to 27 April 1915 (1914 Star), and again from 7 September 1917 to 5 October 1918. Transferring to the Scottish Rifles on 12 July 1918, he was discharged on 22 November 1919.
