Brenet, laureate bust of Napoleon right, rev. heroic statue of Desaix facing, holding sword and raising arm, aquila to left, head of Sphinx and obelisk behind, fallen obelisk at feet, 41mm (Bramsen 976; Julius 2305). Louis Antoine Charles Desaix (1768-1800) was considered one of the greatest generals of the Revolutionary Wars. Napoleon had several statues erected in his memory including the one commemorated here, which was unveiled in the Place des Victoires, 15 August 1810, but which has since been destroyed
