Louis Antoine Charles Desaix (1768-1800) was considered one of the greatest generals of the Revolutionary Wars. Napoleon had several statues erected in his memory including the one commemorated here, which was unveiled in the Place des Victoires, 15 August 1810, but which has since been destroyed
