Bartholomew Coleman was born in Cork on 17 April 1852 and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 3 April 1884. Promoted Leading Stoker aboard Indus, he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 21 September 1893 and later transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve at Devonport in 1904. His Naval Service Record confirms that he was discharged medically unfit on 20 March 1907.
