Samuel H. Ham was born at York Town, Frimley, Surrey, in 1867, the eldest son of watchmaker Septimus Thomas Ham. Initially enrolled as a part time member of the 1st V.B., Royal Berkshire Regiment, Ham transferred to the Grenadier Guards at London on 10 February 1889 and was raised unpaid Lance Corporal on 19 November 1890. Transferred to the Royal Military College as Drill Instructor on 1 April 1898, he was finally discharged from this role in the rank of Staff Sergeant on 15 March 1913, having earlier received the L.S. & G.C. Medal with gratuity in April 1909.
