Alexander II (1214-1249), Short Cross and Stars coinage, Phase C, Sterling, in the name of William the Lion, Roxburgh, Adam, crowned head right with sceptre, pellets in field, willelmvs · rex, rev. adam · on [rore], voided short cross, four stars of six points in angles, 1.18g/6h (Jones & Sugden dies 12/x; cf. SCBI 35, 79; B 6c, fig. 67B; S 5034). Legends partly weak and reverse off centre, otherwise good very fine with a striking portrait, dark tone, very rare £500-£700
Jones & Sugden suggest that chronologically this was the last die naming William before coins were struck in Alexander’s own name.
