Miss Mary Elizabeth Francis served as a Sister with the Territorial Force Nursing Service during the Great War in Egypt and Mesopotamia from 19 October 1915, and for her services during the Great War she was Mentioned in Despatches by General Maude (London Gazette 2 November 1917), and awarded the A.R.R.C. (London Gazette 25 February 1918).
