Elias William Wright served during the Great War as an Ordinary Telegraphist in H.M.S. Indefatigable, and was killed in action at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916 when Indefatigable was hit and sunk during the “Run to the South” in the opening phase of the battle. She was the first ship sunk during the battle, with the loss of 1,017 men. Wright is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
