James Houghton Thorne was born in Sunderland in 1869. An engineer by profession, he was appointed Temporary Engineer Sub Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve on 16 June 1917, and served aboard the tug Atalanta III from 27 June 1917. Formerly owned by the Great Western Railway, this tug was engaged during the Great War as a rescue vessel around the Isles of Scilly. She was scuttled on 11 June 1940 at Le Havre under the name Le Brettoniere.
