The enamel scenes of ‘Day & Night’ are based on a pair of bas-reliefs executed by Bertel Thorvaldsen (1768 - 1844) in Rome. Thorvaldsen was a Danish sculptor who worked in Italy from 1797 to 1838. The goddess of Dawn (Aurora) flies through the air with an outstretched arm scattering flowers on the earth, while Nyx (Goddess of Night) carries infant twins in blissful sleep.
