George Grattan attested for the Royal Field Artillery on 11 May 1911 and served with the 2nd Brigade during the Great War on the Western Front from 11 September 1914 (also entitled to a clasp to his 1914 Star). He was discharged whilst serving with the 2nd Cadet School, R.F.A., on 6 September 1919 and was awarded a Silver War Badge, No. B280371. He was later awarded the Imperial Service Medal upon his retirement, having latterly been employed on the Post Office Railway.
