James Finn was born in Lambeth, London. A Glass Cutter by occupation, he attested for the 28th Regiment at Birmingham on 19 May 1860. Finn transferred to the 25th Regiment in August 1861. Promoted to Corporal in June 1863 and to Sergeant in August 1865. Finn was discharged at Plymouth on 21 November 1878 having served over three years in Canada, over two in Malta and several months in Gibraltar.
