James Walter Gravestock was born in Buckingham, England in June 1892. He initially served during the Great War with the 28th Battalion (Northwest), Canadian Infantry on the Western Front, and received a gun shot wound to the face and left leg, 9 October 1915. Gravestock advanced to Sergeant and transferred to the Canadian Corps Headquarters, Canadian Infantry.
