Arthur George Haynes was born in Cambridge on 21 July 1878 and attested for the Royal Marine Light Infantry on 21 July 1896. He saw service in H.M.S. Pomone off the coast of British Somaliland during the 1902-04 campaign and was discharged to the Royal Fleet Reserve on 12 December 1905. He was recalled for service during the Great War and served with the Chatham Division, Royal Marine Brigade, at Ostend from 26 August 1914, and saw further service at Dunkirk and at the Defence of Antwerp, 3-9 October 1914 (also entitled to a 1914 Star with clasp). He was demobilised on 25 June 1917.
