Michael Andrews Borthwick was born at Carrickfergus, Ireland, on 26 December 1839 and was commissioned Ensign, by purchase, in the 37th Regiment of Foot on 19 December 1856. He served in India during the Great Sepoy Mutiny in Colonel Turner’s Column in Shahabad, and was engaged in the defence of the Bickrumgunge Outpost from 1 September to 11 November 1858. Promoted Lieutenant on 7 December 1858, he relinquished his commission on 1 March 1862.
