Harry Elsted was born in Waterford, Ireland, in 1871 and attested for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Royal Garrison Artillery Militia at Portsmouth on 7 March 1901. He was embodied for service in South Africa during the Boer War on 25 April 1901, and was disembodied on 24 July 1902.
