James Valentine Green attested for the Royal Berkshire Regiment on 2 September 1914 and served with the 6th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 25 July 1915. He was severely wounded by shrapnel or bullet wound to left thigh at Carnoy Valley, near Montaubon, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, and was admitted to No. 18 General Hospital at Camiers. On recuperating he was posted to the Labour Corps and was re-numbered 353211. He was discharged on 24 September 1917, due to wounds, and was awarded a Silver War Badge, No. 277357.
