John White was born at Romsey, Hampshire and attested for service in the Southern Division, Royal Garrison Artillery, at Southampton in February 1888, at the age of 24, joining the R.G.A. Militia Reserve. Following amalgamation in October 1891, he was serving in the Hampshire and Isle of Wight R.G.A. Militia. He was embodied for active service in South Africa during the Boer War as a Gunner on 1 May 1900, and was discharged in February 1902. He is additionally entitled to the clasps South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902 (not entitled to the King’s South Africa Medal).
