Herbert Ernest Newnham was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire. A Tutor by occupation, having knowledge of both French and Latin, whose home address was ‘3 Gordon Terrace, Plymouth, he enrolled into the South African Constabulary on 20 December 1900, aged 24 years. He re-engaged for a further period in 1903 and was discharged in September 1907.
