Edward Herbert Sandford Evans was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 18th (2nd South-East Lancashire) Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, on 1 May 1915, and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 29 January 1916. He was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on 22 July 1916, on which date the Battalion was involved in a raid on the enemy positions near Montauban, and is buried in Peronne Road Cemetery, Maricout, France.
