John Edward Pogson-Smith was educated at Trinity College, Oxford, and was commissioned Temporary Second Lieutenant in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry on 9 January 1915. He served with the 8th Battalion (Pioneers) during the Great War on the Western Front from 19 September 1915, and was promoted Lieutenant. Following the outbreak of the Second World War he was commissioned Lieutenant in the East Kent Regiment on 29 July 1940, and was granted the honorary rank of Captain in 1945.
