Thomas Hollies was born in Worcestershire on 9 April 1893 and attested for the York and Lancaster Regiment. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 9 September 1914, and is recorded as having suffered from Dysentery in October 1916, when admitted to No. 39 Casualty Clearing Station. Advanced Acting Warrant Officer Class II, he was captured and taken prisoner of war at Lagnicourt on 21 March 1918, the first day of the German Spring Offensive: he was recorded as having been wounded in the right hip at the time of his capture.
