John James Ogston was born in Aberdeenshire 29 January 1893 and enlisted in the 5th (Territorial) Battalion, Gordon Highlanders on 5 April 1909. He served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 2 April 1915 to 2 January 1917, and was advanced Company Sergeant Major on 20 February 1916. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion on 30 May 1917 and, returning to the Front, was wounded in the right knee from a shell burst on 14 February 1918. He was promoted Lieutenant on 30 November 1918, and relinquished his commission on 30 October 1919.
