George Howe was born in Stonehouse, Devon, on 17 February 1882 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 9 March 1898. He was promoted Able Seaman on 1 October 1901, and was posted to H.M.S. Grafton on 14 April 1903. He served throughout the Great War in a variety of ships and shore based establishments, and was shore pensioned on 30 June 1922.
