Ernest Frederick Johnson was born in Aldersgate, London. He attested for the 1st Dragoons in the city of his birth in January 1899. Johnson transferred to the Royal Horse Artillery later the same month, and advanced to Bombardier in November 1903. He served in South Africa, October 1899 - July 1900 (invalided with Enteric Fever, 31 May 1900), and in China November 1900 - October 1902. Johnson was discharged, 5 January 1911, having served for 12 years. He subsequently served as a Sergeant with ‘R’ (Greenwich) and ‘Z’ (Croydon) Divisions of the Metropolitan Police.
