Newton Pollard was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 28 July 1958 whilst serving in H.M.S. Cumberland, which at the time was the Royal Navy’s ‘first trials’ cruiser - between 1951 and 1959 she was used for trials of pre-wetting systems, anti-ship missiles, new anti-aircraft guns, and silent propellers.
