George Barry was born on 30 May 1881 at Finure, County Cork, and commenced his naval service as a Boy Second Class in H.M.S. Black Prince on 1 September 1897. He was advanced to Ordinary Seaman, H.M.S. Sheldrake, on 30 May 1899; Able Seaman, H.M.S. Ocean, on 24 April 1901; Leading Seaman, H.M.S. Aurora, on 14 September 1904; and Petty Officer, H.M.S. Hyacinth, on 24 July 1917. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in June 1918, and was shore pensioned in May 1924. He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve in February 1925.
