Leslie Mount was born in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, on 15 March 1901 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Artificer on 3 January 1917, serving during the Great War in H.M.S. Fisgard. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 5 April 1934, and was promoted temporary Acting Warrant Engineer on 1 April 1941.
