Henry Espley was born in Liverpool on 2 January 1883 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 2 August 1898. He served in H.M.S. Rosario from 19 March 1900 to 14 May 1903, and was advanced Able Seaman on 17 March 1901. He served throughout the Great War initially in H.M.S. Lord Nelson, and then in various shore based establishments, and was shore pensioned on 22 April 1923. He did not qualify for a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
