James Hegarty was born in Ghazeehne, India, in 1828 ansd attested for he 16th Lancers at Meerut on 8 January 1845. He transferred to the 9th Lancers on 8 July 1846, and served with the Regiment in both the Second Sikh War and throughout the Great Sepoy Mutiny. He was discharged on 8 January 1867, after 20 years and 30 days’ service, of which 14 years and 3 months had been spent in India.
