Edward Anderson Norris was born in Holbeach, Lincolnshire in March 1890. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in June 1906, and advanced to Yeoman of Signals in January 1918. Norris served with H.M.S. Weymouth (cruiser), October 1913 - May 1916, during which time she served in operations off the East African Coast against the Königsberg - eventually trapping the latter in the Rufiiji River.
Norris advanced to Chief Yeoman of Signals in November 1926 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in May 1927).
