Egyptian, Achæmenid, bronze Phiale Mesamphalos, c. 500 BC, 18.8cm x 3cm, with a low rim, raised central boss or omphalos surrounded by a wreath design of lanceolate leaves in fine repousse work. Beautifully preserved with a light brown glossy patina £500-£700

Provenance: From a UK private collection.

This phiale was used on the dining table during the Achæmenid Empire as a wine bowl at libations; the raised central boss in the centre allowed it to be held securely in the hand
