William Blakey was born at Alford, Lincolnshire on 12 May 1887 and commenced his naval service as an Able Seaman on 24 March 1906, in H.M.S. Dreadnought. He served throughout the Great War, and was present at the Battle of Jutland in H.M.S. Inflexible. He was paid a war gratuity for service in H.M.S. Vernon., and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1927. He was shore pensioned on 25 March 1928.
