Scotland, LOTHIAN, Braid [Edinburgh], [Sir] Williame Dick, copper, 3.38g/6h (N 6368; D 1A). Fair, very rare £150-£200

Provenance: Bt N.A. Clark.

Sir William Dick (1580-1655), banker, Lord Provost of Edinburgh 1638-40, is presumed to have issued these ‘coins’ for use as currency among his colliers and salt-makers. The style resembles the regular 17th century token series but probably pre-dates it by a decade or so
