Joseph George Bond was born at Faversham, Kent in June 1881 and enlisted into the Royal Navy in January 1897 as a Boy Second Class. After serving with numerous ships including H.M.S. Lion, Diadem, Argonaut, Minerva and Lord Nelson, he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve in June 1911. Recalled in August 1914, Bond saw operational service during the Great War aboard the pre-dreadnought battleship H.M.S. Mars and the torpedo boat depot ship H.M.S. Vulcan; it was while serving with the later that he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in August 1917. He was demobilised in June 1921.
