Albert Victor Maxey Roberts was born at Portsmouth in June 1896 and enlisted into the Royal Navy in July 1912 as a Boy Artificer. He saw operational service during the Great War aboard the battleship H.M.S. Royal Oak and the destroyer H.M.S. Marvel. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in July 1929 whilst serving with the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Hermes, having attained the rate of Engine Room Artificer First Class. Demobilised in October 1938 he was recalled the following August and saw active service during the Second World War aboard the light cruiser H.M.S. Caledon.
