Henry Harkan was born on 19 April 1830, but where is not recorded. He joined the Navy as an Assistant Surgeon on 10 October 1851, with this date as his seniority. He joined Fury on 9 December 1851, and remained in her until paid off to half-pay on 18 October 1855. After his service in the Crimean War he was then briefly in Sealark from January to March 1856, and on 14 February 1856 ‘passed’ for Surgeon. He was not actually promoted to Surgeon until 23 May 1861, and to Staff Surgeon 2nd Class in February 1870. He was further promoted to Staff Surgeon on 31 December 1873, and later appointed as a Fleet Surgeon. He retired on 2 March 1880, having been appointed Deputy Inspector General on 8 December 1879.
