Trooper Hassel B. Leonard was severely wounded by a gunshot to the thigh in the second assault on Morosi’s Mountain, 5 June 1879 (ref WO 25/3474 and London Gazette 15 August 1879). Most other published lists claim his wound as being mortal. It was in this action that Surgeon Major Hartley won the Victoria Cross for attending to the wounded under fire.
