Philip Hunkin was born in Mevagissey, Cornwall in November 1873. He joined the Royal Navy as as 3rd Class Writer in April 1895. He served with H.M.S. Dryad, December 1899 - February 1903, and advanced to Chief Writer in March 1907. Subsequent service during the Great War included with the converted ocean liner R.M.S. Empress of Russia, August 1914 - February 1916, and the armoured cruiser H.M.S. Cornwall, from February 1916.
