South Africa 1834-53 (Cornelius Carrol, 74th Regt.) suspension re-affixed, polished, otherwise nearly very fine £300-£360

Cornelius Carrol was born at Solohod, County Tipperary, and enlisted at Cashel into the 74th Foot on 23 July 1842, aged 18 years 5 months. He served abroad at the Cape of Good Hope for 2 years 9 months, and afterwards in the East Indies for 8 years 2 months, and was discharged at Perth on 28 September 1864. He received the medal for the Kaffir War of 1850-53 (which is noted in Gordon Everson’s roll as being in the Regimental Museum) but was not entitled to a medal for the Indian Mutiny. Sold with a 74th Foot pewter tunic button salvaged from the wreck of the Birkenhead, and copied discharge papers.
