Arthur Birch was born in Chesham, Buckinghamshire in 1865 and attested there for the King’s Royal Rifle Corps on 9 October 1884. He served with the 4th Battalion in India from 12 October 1885 to 30 October 1890, and in Burma from 31 October 1890 to 1 May 1892, and took part in the Manipur Expedition as part of the Tammu Column on the North East Frontier, March to May 1891. He transferred to the Army Reserve on 7 May 1892, and was discharged on 8 October 1896, after 12 years’ service.
