George Wallis was born in Kent on 31 May 1866, and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 27 October 1884. Promoted Stoker on 1 October 1885, he transferred to H.M. Coastguard, based at Limerick, on 12 November 1892, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 2 January 1899, whilst still serving on the same station. He was discharged on 14 December 1903, and the following year joined the Royal Naval Reserve at Chatham on 21 June 1904. Following the outbreak of the Great War he re-joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker Petty Officer 2nd Class on 2 August 1914, and served in H.M.S. Dido from 19 August to 7 October 1914. He was discharged medically unfit on 21 October 1914.
