Walter Edward Payne, Royal Marines, was killed when the S.S. Manipur was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine while in convoy off Cape Wrath on 17 July 1940, aged 37 years. His name is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. He was the son of Walter Edward and Ellen Payne, and husband of Lilian Payne, of Ramsgate, Kent.
